LVMH Watch Week: Zenith Goes Long With Green Bay Packers Star Aaron Rodgers
In football, as in life, timing is everything, and the brand and the quarterback are hoping to have a good year and an even greater partnership.
Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers is regarded as one of the most prominent players in the NFL today. Over his career, the 37-year-old has proven invaluable with a remarkably low interception rate and unshakeable loyalty to the Packers, who he has been with since being drafted by the team in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft. Sixteen years later, Rodgers once again led his team to the conference finals this season.
Zenith, the 156-year-old watchmaker, is also having a very good year. Earlier this month, the brand launched the Chronomaster Revival A385, a faithful reproduction of one of the three original El Primero models from 1969, to pretty much universal acclaim.
And now today, Zenith announces Rodgers as their newest brand ambassador. We don’t always applaud these pairings, but this partnership makes perfect sense to us. Here’s why…
All-Star
Both Rodgers and Zenith personify perseverance and consistency. When Rodgers first joined the Packers, the legendary Brett Favre was the starting quarterback. It took three years before Rodgers got the chance to start a game. But by 2011, he led the Packers to their first Super Bowl victory in nearly fifteen years. As a result, the Associated Press named Rodgers Athlete of the Year and league MVP.
Likewise, while Zenith has been in the game for a long time, it has also been a game-changer. Launched in 1969, the El Primero was the first automatic chronograph. It beat at 36,000 semi-oscillations per hour, making it more accurate than most production watches of the time.
In this spirit, Rodgers is the perfect ambassador for Zenith’s Chronomaster Sport campaign. The Chronomaster features the classic El Primero column-wheel chronograph caliber. But it also continues to push the envelope as the first timepiece with a 1/10th of a second chronograph display on a ceramic bezel, allowing for incredibly precise timekeeping. Furthermore, the automatic movement has an increased 60-hour power reserve and a new star-shaped oscillating weight with satin finishing.
Regarding the partnership, Rodgers said, “I couldn’t be more thrilled to join Zenith as its ambassador. I love how this brand is always pushing boundaries and building the future of watchmaking. What moved me with Zenith is how they’re always working to inspire young men and women to go out there to reach for the stars and turn their dreams into reality.”
Star Man
Instead of asking why Zenith has partnered with Rodgers, the real question is: Why hasn’t Rodgers signed up for a watch sponsorship sooner?
Rodgers is a known watch aficionado, so we imagine that he was holding out for a meaningful marriage. In the past, he’s been pictured wearing such high-end timepieces as a Patek Philippe Calatrava, a Rolex Deepsea, and a Roger Dubuis Excalibur Chronograph. We know he’s done his homework.
“Football is a game of precision. You have to spend time learning and studying,” said Rodgers in a press release. “It's not just running down the field as fast as you can or throwing the balls as far as you can.” In short, good things come to those who wait.
Zenith’s philosophy is “Time to Reach Your Star,” and while it seems Rodgers has already reached the pinnacle of NFL stardom, he continues to explore new heights. On top of his many accolades and a stellar football season, Rodgers is also slated to be a guest host for the beloved quiz show Jeopardy! (he won the Celebrity Jeopardy! tournament in 2015). No doubt Zenith hopes its partnership will be as enduring as Rodgers’ career.
According to Julien Tornare, CEO of Zenith, “Aaron Rodgers is undoubtedly a name that will go down in sports history for fundamentally changing the game of football. His focus, determination, and relentless ambition to always outdo himself and lead his team to spectacular victories have made him someone to admire and look up to.”
“Aaron has reached his star and changed the game while doing it but remains incredibly humble and charming when he’s off the field,” added Tornare. “On behalf of Zenith, I’m honored to welcome Aaron Rodgers as our new brand ambassador.”
