This is big news, not just for Omega fans and collectors of high complications, but it also represents a leap forward in tourbillon technology.
GRAVITY’S RAINBOW
Tourbillons are considered the ultimate expression of watchmaking art. Omega’s De Ville Tourbillons, for example, are crafted by a select group of horologists in the manufacture’s Cellule Haut de Gamme department in Biel. As a result, these pieces are exclusive and expensive. By design, they are grail watches before they even reach the salesroom floor.
What makes the Numbered Edition even more alluring than its predecessors is that the same expert watchmakers have crafted a tourbillon cage that keeps rotating even under a magnetic field of 15,000 gauss, which is enough to withstand some MRI machines. They have also set the tourbillon’s speed to one revolution per minute, which allows for the display of seconds. This feature has led to the De Ville Tourbillon Numbered Edition, achieving Omega’s first-ever Master Chronometer certified manual-winding central tourbillon.
Not only does this certification assure the Swiss industry’s highest standard of precision and performance, but it also serves as a testament to OMEGA’s expert watchmakers who crafted the tourbillon.
DEFYING GRAVITY
Of course, when you have a mechanical masterpiece, you want to share its beauty with the world.
Omega’s tourbillons have always been well regarded for technological innovations. The De Ville Tourbillon, for example, is the only central tourbillon wristwatch in the world, with a cage that rotates once per minute, offsetting the effect of gravity on the performance of the watch.
The De Ville Tourbillon Numbered Edition gets its energy from the Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 2640. This marvel of engineering is only visible through the sapphire crystal case back and also displays a three-day power reserve indicator. The hand-beveled and finely finished bridges and mainplate are made from 18K Sedna gold.
CAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE
Another reason tourbillons are irresistible to enthusiasts is that, for all their mechanical excellence, the way the mechanism moves and beats makes it feel alive. You want to see this delicate heart protected and presented with the materials it deserves.
The De Ville Tourbillon Numbered Edition is cased in 43mm of 18K Canopus gold – a gold alloy exclusive to Omega. The buckle and crown are also made from this long-lasting, bright white metal. This brilliant white gold alloy is contrasted with rose-colored 18K Sedna gold lugs, bezel, and caseback.
The sun-brushed dial is also made of 18K Sedna gold but has been treated with a black PVD, which produces an extra element of depth. And the jewel at the center of the dial: the tourbillon cage, which is framed by hand-polished bevels in black ceramised titanium.
The Numbered Edition will be delivered in a special box with a travel pouch and watch crown winder. It also comes with a certificate that records the specific number of the timepiece. The Omega De Ville Tourbillon Numbered Edition is a numbered non-limited edition and is priced at $168,000 USD. The watch is available now via Omega’s website and at Omega boutiques worldwide.
