Behind the Bench: A Look at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton’s Enameling

The Tambour Taiko Arty Automata

Since 2021, the finely honed use of horological automata has distinguished the exceptional high-watchmaking creations of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, as seen in models like the Tambour Taiko Arty Automata.

As you can see, several highly specialized artisanal techniques come together in this watch, all of them applied by hand with great care and skill. However, the most significant of them is the technique of enamel, which involves multiple steps and requires years of experience to execute flawlessly.

While techniques like guilloche or engraving are often used to add depth and visual interest and bring out new dimensions of enamel, the atelier takes a different approach here.

Instead, the Tambour Taiko Arty Automata uses the enamel itself to add depth to the design through individual dial elements that have been meticulously layered with successive applications of enamel, creating an almost pillowy effect. This effect is especially visible in the eye, the lips, and the heart, forming a domed upper surface that enhances the lifelike quality of the moving elements and adds multidimensionality to the watch.

It’s important to note that different enamel shades each have their own unique temperament through both application and firing. Red enamel is one of the most frequently cited examples when illustrating the technical difficulties of working with colored enamel. However, other shades can pose just as much of a challenge even for a highly experienced enameller.

Additional tones in the red family, like the pink and purple enamel used in the Tambour Taiko Arty Automata, are also among the most complex enamel shades to obtain and use due to their thermal sensitivity during the firing process. This is further compounded by the multiple layers of enamel used in this piece, which affect the overall tone and saturation of the final colors.

The Escales Autour du Monde Escale en Alaska

The Escale en Alaska represents one of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton’s most complex pieces ever made, with unparalleled savoir-faireand extraordinary métiers d’art work exhibited across the dial.

Here, multiple enamel methods, developed in-house at La Fabrique des Arts, are on display, including Grand Feu enamel with champleve, cloisonne, and miniature enamel. Beyond the techniques, color also plays a big role in the Escale en Alaska, with a total of 32 different shades – mainly white and blue, along with tones of green.

Remember, each color of enamel behaves differently in its application and more acutely through its firings, of which there were more than 30 to create this model. This hand painting is not just about achieving the right color palette to bring the scene to life – it’s also about maintaining the functionality and integrity of moving parts, managing the volume and weight of enamel used to ensure full operation of those moving elements.

It takes a highly experienced Master Enameller who fully understands not only the properties of many various enamel colors but also how different colors interact and react to various firing temperatures. In total, the enameling required more than 300 hours of meticulous craftsmanship

All of this enameling expertise is further complemented by the in-house work of the Master Engraver. Engraving and enameling are two artistic crafts that go hand in hand. Shifting from application on a smooth, flat surface to one with pattern, texture, and depth brings new dimensions and nuances to enamel.

With the Escale en Alaska pocket watch, every moving element on the dial has been hand-sculpted, creating both character and wonderful life-like detail that allows the enamel work to shine.

The Escale Cabinet of Wonders Series

Last but not least, this trilogy of Escale timepieces maps Louis Vuitton’s journey through the realms of artisanal craft, with designs inspired by Gaston-Louis Vuitton’s personal collections and combining a wide range of métiers d’art techniques, including enamel, in both the Snake’s Jungle and Dragon’s Cloud versions.

For the Snake’s Jungle, three exceptionally demanding techniques come together: micro-sculpture, engraving, and champleve enameling. To give the serpent three-dimensional depth and the semblance of motion, the coils of its white gold body were sculpted according to the rules of perspective. Its scales were hollowed out, then decorated with engraved V-strokes and monogram flowers.

Both the sculpting and engraving stages were executed with strict limits on the amount of white gold that could be removed, so that the surface would be optimized for the application of the champleve enamel. A spray of bamboo leaves, sculpted, engraved, and enameled in the same way, frames the upper right corner of the dial.

Finally, for the Dragon’s Cloud, engraving has been used once again, with finishing in a range of polished and matte surfaces. The scales are enameled, with the lower half of the dragon’s body distinguished using paillonne enamel.

This extremely rare form of enamel contains tiny pieces of gold leaf (known as paillons) suspended between layers of translucent enamel and is one of the most delicate decorative techniques used in watchmaking. Here, yellow-gold monogram flower paillons adorn the scales of the dragon in contrast against a black enamel background.

Over the years, the atelier has collaborated closely with the leading specialists and master artisans like renowned enamel artist Anita Porchet and my mentor, Vanessa Lecci.

La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton’s enameling artistry goes beyond the basics, encompassing the full range of methods like paillone, champleve, cloisonne, plique-a-jour, grisaille, and technique de Geneve.

This combined mastery of enameling techniques distinguishes the organization, as shown in models like the Louis Vuitton Tambour Taiko Arty Automata, Escales autour du Monde Escale en Alaska, and the Escale Cabinet of Wonders series.
