In the century and a half since the founding of Major League Baseball (MLB), just 19,540 men have donned a major league baseball uniform. Of those 19,540 players, only 266 have achieved the coveted feat of batting over a .300 average throughout a regular season. Extrapolate this data further (modern baseball is all about data), and you'll find that just 32 of these players have recorded 3,000 hits.

The names in the 3,000 club are the stuff of legend. The list includes Pete Rose, Ty Cobb, Derek Jeter, Honus Wagner, and, most recently, Albert Pujols. Of these 32 players, there sit just two men who have gone on to have their numbers partially or fully retired by MLB. Jackie Robinson (42) and Roberto Clemente (21). Two legends whose contributions both on and off the field have continued even after their deaths.

Roberto Clemente and Oris

Today, Sep 9, on Roberto Clemente Day, Oris is celebrating the life and career of the famed Pittsburgh Pirate Roberto Clemente. In partnership with the Roberto Clemente Foundation, the Hölstein based brand continues their 'Change for the Better' campaign with the release of a limited edition watch and a donation that will help the foundation's mission of 'Building Nations of Good.'

“MLB and Oris follow a very similar timeline as we are both over 100 years old, but more importantly, both have strong community involvement. Roberto Clemente a true example of this, and his legacy continues to this day through the Roberto Clemente Award,” says V.J. Geronimo Oris’ CEO of North America.

Introducing The Oris Roberto Clemente Limited Edition

To celebrate the life, legacy, and charitable efforts of Roberto Clemente, Oris is releasing the Roberto Clemente Limited Edition. A special version of Oris’ Big Crown Pointer Date, this 40mm stainless steel timepiece is produced in a limited series of 3,000 pieces (the same number of hits Clemente collected during his 18-year career).

This limited-edition Big Crown Pointer Date carries a similar color wave to Clemente’s 1970s era Pirates jersey. It’s bright white dial perfectly contrasts with black and gold hour and date markers. Oris has taken the added step of coloring the ‘21’ date on the dial in yellow gold to signify Clemente’s jersey number.

Finally, the Oris Roberto Clemente Limited Edition is powered by an Oris 754 calibre which is based on the Sellita SW 200-1. This four-hand (hour, minutes, second, date) movement boasts a power reserve of 38 hours and is nestled neatly under a specially engraved Roberto Clemente caseback. The watch comes fitted to a brown leather strap or gold and white NATO strap with Oris buckle. A real treasure for any Clemente or baseball fan!

When asked about Oris’ connection to baseball, Geronimo added, “when thinking about Oris getting involved in baseball and raising worldwide awareness of our Change for the Better initiative, the Clemente Foundation could not have been a better fit. Plus, as a fan of the game, It feels especially good to see this project come to life.”
