Topper Talk: Six Of The Most Popular Watches For Valentine’s Day
There is no more significant symbol of one’s affection than giving the gift of a fine watch. It’s a declaration that there’s no one with whom you’d rather spend time. And because a watch is worn every day, it’s a daily reminder to the wearer of your devotion.
As love tokens, the best timepieces combine elements of the past, present, and future. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, Topper Fine Jewelers is a trusted source of luxury brands like Blancpain, Grand Seiko H. Moser & Cie., Longines, NOMOS Glashütte, Omega, Oris, Zenith, Zodiac, and many others. Since 1965, the boutique has seen seismic societal change, and like true love, has endured the highs and lows with timepieces that continue to spark joy. Here are some of our favorite love tokens from Topper.
Longines Heritage Military Marine Nationale
Based on a design that the brand produced for the French Navy post World War II, the handsome Longines Marine Nationale with its creamy, date-free dial, blued steel hands, brown Super-LumiNova, and a larger-than-vintage-but-still-undersized case has a strong heritage look. Communication is the key to any strong relationship, and while the face has an aged appearance, it is also very legible.
Like its inspiration, the new Heritage Military Marine Nationale is built to last. The stainless steel case’s silhouette, with its double-stepped bezel, long tapered lugs, and oversized crown with a domed crystal, is true to the original. But this baby has been bumped up to 38.50mm for a more contemporary wrist presence. The watch is one of Longines' most faithful heritage re-issues to date.
It also features one of the brand’s most advanced calibers – the Longines L888.5 automatic movement, with a power reserve of 64 hours. Other features include 30-meters water resistance, anti-reflective crystal, and a cognac brown leather strap, making it a trusty everyday wearer. The Longines Heritage Military Marine Nationale strikes the perfect balance of vintage looks and modern capability.
Oris Divers Sixty-Five “Maxi” Topper Edition
Great partnerships require collaboration. The Oris Divers Sixty-Five "Maxi" Topper Edition is the second time the Hölstein-based manufacture and the jewelers have teamed up (the first being the 40mm Divers 65 Topper Edition from 2016), and the chemistry between the two is undeniable.
Limited to 165 individually numbered pieces, the Oris Divers Sixty-Five "Maxi" Topper Edition has strong vintage vibes, evoking the energy of the 1960s just before the Summer of Love. Its big 42mm stainless steel case has been paired with an age-appropriate 12-3-6-9-hour dial painted with bold BG-W9 Super-LumiNova. This luminous paint is a great complement to the orange-tipped seconds hand and the matte black dial.
You will also love modern touches like the Oris Cal. 733 automatic no-date movement with 40-hour power reserve, the riveted stainless steel bracelet, and the domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inside.
Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional Master Chronometer Hesalite
While any Speedy will keep the honeymoon going, the new Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional Master Chronometer Hesalite is an especially thoughtful gift.
First of all, there is a shared history. Each Speedmaster that has traveled to the Moon were models featuring Hesalite glass versus sapphire crystal. Given its name by Omega, Hesalite is a super-strong acrylic à la Plexiglass. Sapphire has become the standard in modern luxury watches because it is scratch-resistant, crisply transparent, and generally resistant to scratches or dings that would leave visible marks on Hesalite. But sometimes those little imperfections become part of a watch’s story, and there’s something romantic about that.
Second, the Hesalite glass also has a nice domed effect, which allows for a better view of the textured black dial. You’ll also adore such details as the classic asymmetrical case, the step dial, the embossed Seahorse medallion on the caseback, and the famous dot-over-90 (DON) and dot diagonal to 70 on the aluminum bezel ring.
Finally, this 42mm stainless steel Moonwatch comes on a coated nylon strap with leather backing. Powered by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 – the Moonwatch’s first new movement in 50 years – this timepiece will be unaffected by the most extreme magnetic conditions.
Breitling Superocean Heritage ‘57 Outerknown
For a watch that asserts your sweetheart’s commitment to love and the Earth, we recommend the latest Breitling Superocean Heritage ‘57 Outerknown. This piece is the third Breitling created in collaboration with the sustainable apparel brand, Outerknown, co-founded by surfing legend Kelly Slater.
With its warm, bronze-colored dial, this timepiece recalls the laid-back surf scene in Southern California and Hawaii back in the 1950s and 1960s. The prominent concave bidirectional rotating bezel and 42mm stainless steel case and the arrow-shaped hands, over-sized indices, and concave bezel draw inspiration from the original 1957 SuperOcean. But we are also attracted to the forward-thinking NATO strap made from Outerknown ECONYL yarn – a material sourced from repurposed nylon waste. The caseback also features an engraved Outerknown logo.
Powered by the Breitling Caliber 10, which offers a power reserve of approximately 42 hours with water resistance to up to 10 bar (100 meters), the Superocean Heritage ‘57 Outerknown is COSC-certified.
Grand Seiko Spring Drive “Soko” U.S.-Exclusive Editions
In Japan, sōkō is the name of one of the 24 sekki, or seasons. Meaning "frost descends," sōkō is just one of the many seasonal milestones that connect between humanity and nature.
Giving the gift of a Grand Seiko Soko is a meaningful way to connect with your significant other. U.S.-Exclusive Editions, these two timepieces have spiritual significance. The dials are inspired by the 1,000-year-old bamboo grove of the Arashiyama district in Kyoto. Each dial, available in silver (SBGA427) and gray (SBGA429), has vertical graining and emerald green sweeping seconds and power reserve indicator hands, representing the way light shines through the bamboo stalks in late autumn.
The heartbeat of the Soko is Grand Seiko’s new Spring Drive 9R65 Caliber, which marks the passage of time with a smooth sweeping seconds hand and provides a 72-hour power reserve. There is no more poetic way to represent spending a lifetime with somebody.
G-SHOCK Full Metal Red
Red is the color of love. Metal symbolizes protection.
The G-SHOCK Full Metal Red is a fun way to represent both of these attributes. The latest addition to the Full Metal GMWB5000 family, this G-SHOCK comes in a red stainless steel case. It’s love at first sight, but this model boasts an ion-plated finish as well as a diamond-like carbon-coated screwdown caseback to ensure this love will last.
In addition to this brand-new look, this iteration of the Full Metal GMWB5000 comes equipped with many premium technical features, including Bluetooth Connectivity via the G-SHOCK Connected ap, and Multi-Band 6 Atomic Timekeeping for self-adjusting and an accurate hour/date display virtually anywhere on the globe. It also boasts an LCD digital display that makes the watch easy to read from any angle, as well as Tough Solar Technology, making it capable of self-charging even with low sun exposure.
Marco Bicego Marrakech Onde
A great watch also deserves a good partner. Topper also offers a collection of Marco Bicego Marrakech Onde gold and diamond jewelry.
The second generation of goldsmiths in the Veneto region of northern Italy, Marco Bicego debuted his eponymous collection in the year 2000. Marrakech is the maison's signature collection, known for its hand-hammered 18-karat gold coils embellished with diamonds (in Italian, Onde means ripple or wave). And any of this collection’s necklaces, rings, and earrings will have the same heart-pounding effect as surf crashing on the beach in the moonlight.
Whether you choose to express your love through horology or fine jewelry, it’s good to know that these options will stand the test of time.
