Wednesday, April 22nd marked the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, and for the first time in a half-decade, it felt like the planet was making some environmental progress. There are reports of dolphins in Cagliari and swans returning to Milan. Pictures of smog-free Los Angeles skies and clean Venetian canals have popped up all over the internet. All signs that when people are not around, nature can heal itself.

And while it seems like it’s a silver lining of the COVID-19 crisis, the truth is that this comeback has been happening for a while. After all, the sea turtles spotted on Florida’s deserted beaches were born and grew into adulthood before the pandemic. What’s different is that now we have the time to observe and appreciate the revitalization of nature that conservation groups like the National Park Foundation have worked so hard to achieve.

Alpina has also been doing its part to protect nature by partnering with the NPF. And the newest collaboration – the limited edition National Park Foundation Alpiner Quartz – serves to remind us that nature is wonderful, and the best way to experience it is to protect it.

Call of the Wild

For over 50 years, the NPF has served as the official non-profit partner of the United States National Park Service. Its mission is to protect U.S. national parks and educating visitors about the unparalleled experiences that these parks offer.

Since 2018, Alpina has been supporting these efforts, and this is the first timepiece created as a result of this collaboration. Alpina’s historic roots in adventuring and alpinist tradition are why the brand’s main focus is on preserving the rivers and trails systems of over 400 parks, sites, and recreation areas managed by the National Parks Service.

And while clean silhouettes and striking profiles lines are a signature of the Swiss brand’s Alpiner collection, Alpina’s NPF collaborations take a great deal of inspiration from the beauty and breadth of the USA.

The National Park Foundation Alpiner Quartz is also a timepiece that is meant to be enjoyed in natural surroundings. It has all the elements that are essential for a sports watch taht is built from sturdy stainless steel.

Although it also has its own natural beauty, Alpina is also okay if you want to do a little virtue signaling with this patriotic timepiece. The goal of this timepiece is to raise awareness of our nation’s path and waterways, and its forest green dial and brown leather strap evoke the essence of the great outdoors.

USE IT OR LOSE IT

In a press release for the launch of this new edition, Alpina’s Managing Director Fernando Sanchez says, “This timepiece is the next step in our partnership with the National Park Foundation, and the perfect opportunity for the wearer to show their support of the national parks. We can’t wait to see the adventures people encounter in the National Park System!”

And this Alpiner is built for adventure indeed. It has a very modern AL-240 quartz movement that displays the hours, minutes, seconds, and date, all of which is protected by a scratch-resistant convex sapphire crystal fixed in a 42mm diameter case and water0resistant up to 100m/330ft.

The National Park Foundation Alpiner Quartz comes in a brown strap embossed with the National Park Foundation logo, and the caseback displays the unique limited-edition number along with the Alpina and NPF logos. The watch is also presented in a customized box and comes with an NPF patch, so you can look good and feel good at the same time.

CALL OF THE WILD

So now that we have seen that our actions can help change the planet for the better, it’s good to know that even something as simple as buying a watch can produce positive outcomes.

“Alpina’s generous support helps us fulfill our mission to protect and enhance America’s national parks for present and future generations,” says Stefanie Mathew, senior vice president of corporate partnerships at the National Park Foundation. “The National Park Foundation is proud to partner with a brand that encourages its consumers to experience the beauty and history of these national treasures.”

The Alpina National Park Foundation Alpiner Quartz is now available in a limited series of 300 pieces and is priced at $795.
